Walmart, Home Depot earnings lift US stocks

Wall Street stocks opened slightly higher Tuesday following better-than-expected earnings from retail giants Wal-Mart and Home Depot.

Five minutes into trade, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 17,499.72, up 16.71 points (0.10 percent).

The broad-based S&P 500 added 0.14 (0.01 percent) at 2,053.33, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 2.44 (0.05 percent) to 4,987.06.

Wal-Mart Stores rose 2.7 percent as it reported third-quarter earnings of $1.03 per share, five cents above expectations.

Fellow Dow member Home Depot gained 2.4 percent after reporting that third-quarter earnings surged 12.2 percent to $1.7 billion.
