Why Twitter is furious over Disney+'s 'Home Alone' reboot

“Home Alone” — the 1990s classic about a young boy accidentally left to fend for himself while his family is abroad — is getting the Hollywood reboot treatment, and some people are already unhappy about it.

The original film, which starred Macaulay Culkin, will be revived for Disney’s streaming service Disney+. It will star “JoJo Rabbit’s” young breakout actor, Archie Yates, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

But fans of the original are still not impressed. They’ve taken to social media to criticize studios in general for repackaging already successful films, instead of creating new content.

‘Home Alone’ earned $285.7 million in domestic theatrical gross — holding the number 1 spot at the North American box office for an impressive 12 weekends in a row.

One Twitter user wrote, “Nothing against these actors and the film but nobody asked for a Home Alone reboot!! Instead of attempting to remake already great films, people should be creating and telling new stories!”

Another pointed out the film’s inherent flaws in the modern era:

The new reboot comes amid a recent surge in revivals, as streaming services look to capitalize on fan favorites from the past.

For instance, HBO Max (T) is rumored to be gearing up for a ‘Friends’ reunion special.

Meanwhile, NBCUniversal’s (CMCSA) new Peacock service is set to host “Saved by the Bell” and “Battlestar Galactica” revivals. NBC’s chairman also revealing to Deadline that resurrecting “The Office” is a big time “goal.”
