Joe Biden visited a Ford electric vehicle facility in Dearborn, Michigan amid Arab American protests in the city against US support for Israel’s military strikes in Jerusalem and Gaza.
While Biden joked around with reporters, the city’s Muslim community was “so angry” after giving the president their support.
“I don’t know if anyone had a stopwatch, but I think if we’re going zero to 60 in about 4.3… 4.4?” he said, before a reporter asked if they could ask a question about Israel given the importance of the conflict
“No, you can’t,” Biden replied. “Not unless you get in front of the car before you step on it... I’m only teasing.”
More than 200 people have died.
Legislation to create a 9/11-style commission to investigate the deadly US Capitol riots by a mob of former president Donald Trump‘s supporters has suffered a serious setback after a senior Republican – House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy – expressed his opposition to the plan.
In an apparent attempt to block a deal announced last week by the top Democratic and Republican members of the House of Representatives’ Homeland Security Committee, Mr McCarthy said in a statement: “I cannot support this legislation.”
Elsewhere, the Biden administration approved the release of three prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay for almost 20 years without charge.
Citing US government officials and lawyers for the detainees, TheNew York Times reported the decision was approved last week but that that the timing of the release was unclear as the State Department negotiated agreements with countries to take them.
