Top 3 Reasons Why It's Great To Go Cashless

This article was originally on GET.com at: Top 3 Reasons Why It's Great To Go Cashless

The idea of cashless payments isn't new in Singapore, but it sure is in hawker centres where many of us grew up learning about our favourite dishes, chope-ing seats with packets of harmless looking tissue paper and chatting with the aunties and uncles who know our orders by heart if we frequent their stalls enough.

Working our way to becoming a smart nation, it is hardly surprising that more hawker centres in Singapore are offering diners the option of making cashless payments for food and drinks. According to a news report, although this payment option has been doled out by some hawkers, consumers aren't really hopping onto the cashless payment bandwagon. Be that as it may, it makes perfect sense to go cashless, well, just not at a hawker centre. Here, we at GET.com share with you our top 3 reasons why going cashless is a great idea.

Top 3 Reasons Why It's Great To Go Cashless

1. Nobody Can Mindlessly Borrow Money From You

People who always end up lending money to others but not getting back what's rightfully theirs will feel me. With little or no cash in your wallet, none of the toxic people around you can borrow cash from you easily without the genuine intention of returning you what you'd lent.

Well, call me miserly or whatever you want but I am quite particular about lending money to others however little the amount may be because, from experience, I'm terrible at asking for my money back and there have been multiple occasions when ‘friends' conveniently forgot that they'd borrowed from me. Now, $20 may not sound like a lot but multiply it by 10 times and the magical number will become $200.

2. It Isn't Safe To Lug A Bag Full Of Cash Around When Paying For Big Ticket Items

Who in their right mind would carry a duffle bag or luggage full of cash when buying expensive items like Chanel bags, Tiffany & Co. jewels, or even their first HDB flat? It's not safe and neither is it practical. There have been plenty of cases in the news regarding robberies even in a considerably safe place like Singapore.

After all, credit cards give us the convenience that cash can't afford. For instance, Apple Pay allows consumers using an iPhone (or Apple Watch or iPad) and American Express issued cards or MasterCard and Visa cards from DBS, POSB, OCBC, UOB and Standard Chartered to pay with their devices in a jiffy.

In any case that you aren't an Apple user, Samsung Pay will be available here from 16 June 2016 onwards. The Samsung devices that can support Samsung Pay include Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. Consumers can use their MasterCard and Visa cards from DBS, POSB, OCBC, Standard Chartered and Citibank.

I digress but although coins do come in handy for smaller purchases, it isn't always the nicest idea to be carrying a whole wallet full of coins when you're out enjoying your well-deserved weekend break, especially if you're a guy who heads outside without fancy bags to store your belongings. And since we're on the topic on Singapore coins, here are 7 things you probably didn't know about our Singapore coins.

3. Certain Cards Can Help You Save Money

For the record, credit cards can help you save money in different ways. So long as you don't have the habit of getting into and accumulating credit card debts perpetually, you're pretty much good to go when it comes to reaping cash rebates or reward points that your credit cards can potentially give you.

For example, if you're looking for a fuss-free cashback credit card, a great card that you could consider getting your hands on is The American Express® True Cashback Card. This card gives you a flat 1.5% cashback on all spending no matter whether you're spending on food, drinks, or clothes. There's no cap on the rebates that you earn, nor any minimum spending required.

The majority of Singaporeans love food and spend good money dining out. Wouldn't it be nice to earn rebates while feasting with your friends and loved ones? If you're intending to splash out instead, then this list of the 10 most expensive weekend lunch buffets may be right up your alley.

And if you're a diehard shopaholic, why not consider saving a card slot in your wallet for Citibank Rewards Card VISA, a rewards credit card that rewards you on your shopping. This card lets you earn 10X Rewards when you spend on clothes, shoes or bags online or at departmental stores. Also, you'll get to earn up to 10% Citi Rebate at more than 500 locations in Singapore. Pretty amazing, isn't it?

Just so you know, credit cards are not the only cards that give you awesome discounts. For instance, these 5 food court discount cards surely deserve some of your wallet space if you eat out pretty frequently; a 10% savings sounds pretty solid in my opinion.
