Tokyo Olympics: Badminton duo clinch first medal of Games for Malaysia

TOKYO — Badminton men's doubles duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik clinched a bronze medal for Malaysia, after they defeated second-seeded Indonesians Hendra Setiawan and Mohamad Ahsan 17-21, 21-17, 21-14 at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza on Saturday (31 July).

This is Malaysia's first medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

"It’s unbelievable what we have done today, winning the bronze medal. We are really happy with this, and we are satisfied with our performance today," Chia told the official Olympic media service.

"During the second game, we were really pressured because they were leading by about four points. We tried to calm ourselves down, We said, 'Try to get point by point, forget about losing, forget about winning,' It worked."

On Thursday, Chia and Soh had scored a sensational quarter-final win over top-seeded Indonesian pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

However, they fell to Chin's Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen in Friday's semi-finals.

Malaysia's other shuttlers - Lee Zii Jia (men's singles), Soniia Cheah (women's singles), Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean (women's doubles) and Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) - have been eliminated in earlier rounds.
