Is it time to seriously consider getting the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card?

Customers are used to paying a little more when they visit Whole Foods, but now some shoppers will actually get cash back.

On Tuesday, Amazon announced that eligible Prime members using the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card from Chase will earn 5% back on purchases at Whole Foods. Cardholders who are not Prime members will earn 3% back on purchases at Whole Foods.

Kimberly Palmer, credit card expert at Nerdwallet, says this new perk could help to attract new customers. “It’s a competitive card for budget-conscious consumers looking for cash back rewards,” she said.

Amazon originally launched the card in 2015, and up until now, the perks really only benefited those who did a lot of shopping on Amazon. Now that cash back at Whole Foods has been introduced, budget-conscious shoppers may find themselves drawn to the credit card.

Indeed, loyal customers will quickly see the rewards show up in their account. If a shopper spends $200 at Whole Foods, they will earn 5% cash back or about $10. Those rewards will be accessible on your Amazon.com account, where shoppers can redeem points for millions of items on the retail site.

In addition to the 5% cash back, Prime cardholders also get 5% back on Amazon.com, 2% back at restaurants, and 1% back on all other purchases. The card also has perks touted by other popular credit cards, including no cap on rewards earned, no foreign transaction fees when traveling abroad, lost luggage reimbursement, purchase protection and zero fraud liability.

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card also has no annual fee, however, card holders must have a Prime membership to reap the full benefits. This costs $12.99 a month, or $99 for the annual membership.

Is the Amazon Visa Card right for you?

This is just the latest move from Amazon to make Whole Foods more budget-friendly. After acquiring the organic grocery store back in August 2017, Amazon immediately announced priced cuts on staples like bananas, brown eggs, ground beef and rotisserie chicken. In Nov., the organic grocer lowered prices on organic turkeys from $3.49 per pound to $2.49, right before Thanksgiving.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member who shops at Whole Foods, signing up for this card is almost a no brainer. Passing up on 5% cash back is basically like giving away free money. That said, with an APR between 15.49 to 23.49 (based on your creditworthiness), the card’s rewards only make sense if you pay your balance in full every month.

If you’re not an Amazon Prime loyalist, but still want to score cash back at the grocery store, there are a handful of other credit cards with comparable perks. For instance, the Blue Cash Preferred card from American Express offers 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, for up to $6,000 in purchases per year. After that, it goes down to 1%. This card also gives users 4% cash back at gas stations and 1% cash back on general purchases. It does have an annual fee of $95, but that’s comparable to the $99 annual prime membership.

The Bank of America Cash rewards credit card also offers 2% back at grocery stores and has no annual fee.
