Maduro's lawmaker son says Venezuela is open to paying debts to China
CARACAS (Reuters) -Venezuela is open to paying its debt to China - which according to independent data amounts to some $10 billion - lawmaker Nicolas Maduro Guerra, son of President Nicolas Maduro, told Reuters in an interview on Thursday. Venezuela's relationship with China is "foolproof and weatherproof," Maduro Guerra said, adding that Chinese companies are keen to invest in the South American country. China is a major player in Venezuela's oil and gas sector, as well as being the OPEC country's largest creditor.

Exclusive-India projects biggest power shortfall in 14 years in June
India is projecting its biggest power shortfall in 14 years in June after a slump in hydropower generation, its government told Reuters, and is racing to avoid outages by deferring planned plant maintenance and re-opening idled units. The deficit also follows delays, a government source said, in the commissioning of 3.6 gigawatts (GW) of new coal-fired plants which had been targeted to be operational before March. A peak shortage of 14 GW is forecast in June during nighttime hours, when solar capacity is offline, the Central Electricity Authority, the country's planning body for the power sector, told Reuters in a statement.

Asian spot liquefied natural gas prices rose this week on stronger demand amid high temperatures in north and south China, pushing European buyers to bid at relatively narrow discounts to attract sellers. The average LNG price for June delivery into north-east Asia rose to $10.50 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), from $10.40/mmBtu in the previous week, industry sources estimated. "We have seen Asian and European prices rise higher, mostly following news of the Gorgon LNG outage," said Ryhana Rasidi, LNG analyst at data analytics firm Kpler.

China's car exports hit record high in April, as domestic sales fall
BEIJING (Reuters) -China's car exports surged to a record high in April, data showed on Friday, as domestic sales slipped 5.8% from a year earlier amid intensifying price competition and consumers' caution about spending on big items during a shaky economic recovery. Car exports jumped 38% year-on-year to 417,000 units in April, continuing strong momentum from the previous month which posted a 39% growth in exports, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) said. An ongoing anti-subsidy investigation by the EU into Chinese automakers has disrupted and put pressure on vehicle exports to the bloc, but China has been actively exploring South America, Australia and ASEAN markets for exports, said Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the association.

Lured by official promises of cheap hydropower, China Hongqiao Group and a handful of other coal-reliant smelters several years ago began moving 6.56 million metric tons of capacity - about 15% of China's total - from the northern rust belt to the mountainous and ethnically diverse Yunnan province, known for tea, coffee and wild mushrooms. Canadian oil sands production to rise 15% by 2030, report says
Canada's oil sands will produce 3.8 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2030, a 15% increase from current levels, as companies focus on investing in optimizing existing projects and making them more efficient, a report from S&P Global Commodity Insights said on Thursday. Oil sands production has increased 1.3 million bpd over the past decade and currently stands at 3.3 million bpd. S&P Global's new projection that oil sands output will reach 3.8 million bpd by 2030 is 100,000 bpd higher than its previous growth forecast.

Ford Motor said on Friday that John Lawler would hand over his role as finance chief to ex-Lucid Motors CFO Sherry House in early 2025 as he transitions to vice chair to take on broader responsibilities at the Detroit automaker. House, who has previously held leadership roles at Alphabet's Waymo and worked with General Motors , will join Ford as vice president of finance effective in early June before taking over the CFO role.
