Analysis-Heavy oil shortage spells higher cost for shippers, road builders
Mexican export cuts and a rerouting of Canadian output are shrinking already limited supplies of heavy crude in the Atlantic basin, driving up refiners' costs with a likely knock-on effect to industries ranging from shipping and construction to Middle Eastern power plants. Heavy-sour crudes yield more residual fuel oils that are either upgraded into higher-value road fuels, or converted into marine fuels and bitumen. "The combination of tighter heavy crude and fuel oil supplies, as well as the seasonal rise in power generation demand is expected to push up fuel oil cracks in the weeks ahead," said Vortexa analyst Xavier Tang, referring to the spread between the price of crude and the refined product.

Shell smashes forecasts with $7.7 billion quarterly profit
LONDON (Reuters) -Shell reported first-quarter profit of $7.7 billion on Thursday, exceeding expectations as disruption to Red Sea shipping and Russian refining boosted oil trading and liquefied natural gas (LNG) production rose. Shell's cashflow rose by 6% from the previous quarter to $13.3 billion, reflecting strong operational performance, particularly in the LNG division, which together with trading helped offset a decline in natural gas prices that weighed on earnings of rivals including Exxon Mobil and Chevron last week. "Shell delivered another quarter of strong operational and financial performance, demonstrating our continued focus on delivering more value with less emissions," CEO Wael Sawan said.

Oil settles down on US jobs data, steepest weekly loss in 3 months
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Oil prices settled lower on Friday, and posted their steepest weekly loss in three months as investors weighed weak U.S. jobs data and possible timing of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut. Brent crude futures for July settled 71 cents lower, or 0.85%, to $82.96 a barrel. Investors were concerned that higher-for-longer borrowing costs would curb economic growth in the U.S., the world's leading oil consumer, after the Federal Reserve decided this week to hold interest rates steady.

Pioneer reports lower profit ahead of its takeover by Exxon
Earlier in the day, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission gave the go-ahead to Exxon Mobil's $60 billion purchase of the company, but barred Pioneer's former CEO, Scott Sheffield, from joining Exxon's board on allegations he attempted to collude with OPEC to raise oil prices. Sheffield retired as Pioneer's CEO on Dec. 31, but continues to serve on its board and was due to take a seat on Exxon's board when the acquisition closed.

Manila and Beijing have traded barbs almost daily since Tuesday's confrontation at the disputed Scarborough shoal, where China's coast guard used water cannon against to two vessels from the Philippines, prompting outrage from its government. "We've been very clear to everyone, to include Beijing, that the kind of behaviour that we've seen, where Filipino crews are put in danger... sailors have been injured and property damaged, that is irresponsible behaviour," Austin told a joint press conference in Hawaii.
