*Spoilers for the 13th episode of Supergirl*

Let’s start off by saying that this was the best episode of the series so far. The pacing of this episode was spot on and the story is a great plot progression for the show so far.

This episode kicks off with Kara waking up in her bed. No, not her bed on Earth but her bed on Krypton. This is not a flashback because it’s adult Kara - this is happening now. Then Alura appears; Kara is shocked. “You’re home,” her mother says. But is she? This can’t be real, can it? At work, Cat wonders where Kara is and think she’s afraid of facing her boss after breaking up with Adam. Winn tells her that there must be a good reason and he hasn’t been able to get in touch with her because there’s a solar storm that’s affecting communications systems. Even James doesn’t know where she is so they call up Alex and they search Kara’s apartment to find her passed out with the plant-like creature from last week stabbed in her chest. She’s taken to the DEO to get medical help but when they get there, Hank yells at James and Winn because technically they’re the media and they’re threatening the whole idea of a ‘secret organisation’. As a last resort, Alex turns to Maxwell for help because he might know what the plant is; she attacks and threatens him instead.

Cut to Astra and Non, who are planning an attack using the solar storm. Astra gets angry at her husband who’s the one behind the plant attack. It’s called ‘Black Mercy’ and it has trapped Kara’s consciousness in lifelike hallucinations that create an idealistic life, one that she could have had if Krypton was never destroyed. Alex and Hank realise that it can’t be pulled off Kara’s chest by force because it could kill her. While on Krypton, Kara realises that someone is manipulating her and toying with her memories.

At work, Winn tries to break the news that Kara won’t come in to the office today because she’s not feeling well. He turns into a bickering mess and Cat threatens to fire Kara once again if she doesn’t come in. Alex tells Hank that it’s their responsibility to make sure that Kara’s job and life at CatCo is still there for her when she’s back. “What can I do?” Hank asks. Cue Martian Manhunter! He shape shifts into Kara. Winn and James are surprised, while Cat gets back to bossing Kara around.

On Krypton, Kara sees her father, but also realises that she’s beginning to lose her memories of Earth. When she sees Astra, she realises that its her and Non that’s doing this to her. Another familiar face is her young cousin Kal-El (who walks around with a jumper bearing their family crest?). Alex is attacked by Astra in Kara’s apartment and she tells her about the Black Mercy, insisting she can help. Naturally, Hank doesn’t want Astra’s help. Alex says she could modify their virtual reality tests that they can use it to enter Kara’s mind to convince her to reject the hallucinations. That means merging Alex’s consciousness with Kara’s so she can convince her sister to reject the fantasy so she can come back. Alex asks Maxwell for help because they have a common enemy. Alex asks James to stop Hank if she tries to bring her back without her sister. She plans to come back with Kara even if that means her own life.

Meanwhile Non and Astra prepare for their attack using the solar storm. Non questions Astra’s loyalty. Winn says to Hank to consider the fact that Non’s next move includes the satellites being down, using their own technology being against them. Hank requests if he’d like to work with his team, a team-up waiting to happen? In Kara’s fantasy, Alex arrives and doesn’t know who she is. Alex quickly explains what’s happening and says she’s come to take her home; Kara doesn’t believe her. Alex’s begins to have a seizure; Hank is prepared to pull her out but James steps in saying he won’t allow that, requesting to give her more time. Alura immediately sentences Alex to the Phantom Zone which leads to an emotional speech by Alex as guards try to hold her down. Her sister begs Kara to remember her life surrounded by the people that she cares about because Alex needs her sister. Krypton begins to crumble as Kara makes her decision. She wishes her fantasy life was true but comes to realise that what she’s witnessing isn’t real. Krypton will be in her heart forever. Alex comes back to reality, and so does Kara as the plant peels away from her chest.

Winn figures out that Non is using Lord Technologies to override the civilian network. Kara wants to take on Non alone and when they meet, she’s angry because he took her parents away from her again. Alex goes up against Astra and begs her to fight for the DEO instead. As Astra attacks Alex, the Martan Manhunter steps in. As Astra becomes close to killing Hank, a Kryptionite sword is pierced through her back. Alex. When Kara arrives on the scene, Hank takes the blame saying he had no choice. Kara’s final moments with Astra include her aunt warning her about Non’s plan. Astra says it’s too late for Myriad.

Other points:

  • Kara (Hank) tries to stand up to Cat but ends up fake crying. Cat gives her a stern warning to not cry “big fat crocodile tears” at work.

  • Kara and Winn are back to being friends. Their group hangs seem pretty fun.
