Southampton have joined the race for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham after the shock sale of striker Danny Ings to Aston Villa.

It was confirmed on Wednesday night that Ings, Southampton's most important player, had joined Dean Smith's impressive list of summer signings in a deal which could reach £30million.

The deal was quickly completed with it only becoming clear to Ings and those around him that a move was possible last week.

Southampton will now look to re-invest the money and have joined Arsenal and West Ham in pursuit of Chelsea's Abraham, who fell down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge having been a key fixture during Frank Lampard's time at the club.

The Saints, however, are starting on the back foot in the race given they are more interested in a loan deal than a permanent move while Chelsea would rather see the England international depart for good if he is to leave this summer.

Arsenal and West Ham are both keen on a permanent deal, though neither are keen to meet Chelsea's initial valuation of £40m. West Ham may also struggle to meet Abraham's wage demands, just as was the case for teammate Kurt Zouma.
