Singapore to import eggs from Indonesia
Indonesia will be Singapore's 18th source of eggs.
SINGAPORE – The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Monday (3 April) said it has approved Indonesia as a new exporter of table eggs to Singapore.
"To meet our national egg-petite, we continue to diversify our egg sources and have approved Indonesia as a new source country to export hen shell eggs to Singapore," the SFA said in a Facebook post.
Including Indonesia, the number or countries and regions accredited to export hen shell eggs to Singapore has expanded to 18 countries, up from 12 in 2019.
However, SFA added, supply fluctuations may happen from time to time due to factors such as disease outbreaks and supply disruptions. "Several countries were recently affected by bird flu outbreak, which affected their poultry and eggs production," SFA said.
The SFA has also encouraged the food industry to diversify and import raw food materials from various sources to contribute to Singapore's food resilience.
Meanwhile, consumers can play their part by being flexible with food options in the event of disruption. "Being open and adaptable to new food sources such as eggs from Indonesia is also a step towards building Singapore's food resilience, ensuring that we will always have egg-nough," it said.

Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Minister Grace Fu said in a Facebook post that no country can be spared from uncertainties in the global food supply. "For instance, the worldwide egg shortage situation has been the result of an unprecedented avian flu outbreak, supply chain issues, and the rising costs of feed and fuel," she said. "I encourage Singaporeans to be mindful of potential disruptions and to be flexible with food and ingredient choices and adaptable to new food sources."
SFA noted in a February 2023 article, on its digital publication Food for Thought, that around 70 per cent of Singapore's chicken egg supply is imported, while the remaining 30 per cent comes from local production. Local egg production is expected to meet about half of Singapore's demand for eggs when the fourth egg farm begins operations in 2024.
