Singapore’s first PS4 game One Upon Light launches today

Singapore’s first Playstation 4 game, One Upon Light launches today. Developed by the SUTD Game Lab, it’s expected to have about six to 10 hours of gameplay centred around a light-phobic scientist who has to traverse tricky landscapes in order to find out what gave him this affliction.

It took about two years for a seven-man team to take this top-down puzzler from concept to completion. Described by programmer Chuah Chong Yunn as a mid to hardcore game, indie darling One Upon Light has won hearts in every country it has exhibited so far.

Since the game is first launching for Southeast Asia, it will be available in several languages in addition to English; One Upon Light is completely localized in Thai and Bahasa Indonesia, and also comes with Traditional Chinese and Korean subtitles. The development team’s immediate plan for the game is to launch it in Japan as soon as possible before exploring a worldwide launch sometime in 2015.

Having tried and watched the game demo several times, I have to say One Upon Light is pretty awesome. It’s a polished, well-thought-out gem that, while bearing visual similarities to Limbo, reinvents the wheel with its light/shadow gameplay. It’s a stark contrast to Singapore’s first Playstation 3 game, Page Chronica, which tried to be a platforming word game and failed in all aspects.

One Upon Light won’t be receiving any further content updates apart from bug fixes, so make sure you stretch it out. However, the team does have some ideas it wants to expand on in future games, and may explore those in the future.

One Upon Light is available on the Southeast Asian Playstation Store for US$6.49. Expect our review of it up sometime next week.
