Sembcorp Marine appoints Yap Chee Keong as independent director and deputy chairman

Yap was the CFO of Singapore Power from 2002 to 2009.

Sembcorp Marine has announced the appointment of Yap Chee Keong as an independent director of the company with effect from Dec 8. He is also appointed as deputy chairman of the board, as well as a member of the board’s executive committee.

Yap, 61, was previously the former CFO of Singapore Power between 2002 to 2009. He was also the executive director of The Straits Trading Company from 2013 to 2014.

He currently sits on various boards including Shangri-La Asia, Olam International, Sembcorp Industries, MediaCorp, Ensign InfoSecurity, PIL and Aviva Singlife Holdings.

Yap previously served on the board of Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) and was a member of ACRA’s Public Accountants Oversight Committee. He was a member of the working group convened by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Singapore Exchange (SGX) and ACRA to review the Guidebook for Audit Committees in Singapore, as well as the panel convened by MAS, SGX, ACRA and the Singapore Institute of Directors, which formulated guidelines for board risk committees.

He holds a Bachelor of Accountancy from the National University of Singapore and is a Fellow of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants, CPA Australia and Singapore Institute of Directors.

Shares in Sembcorp Marine closed up 0.1 cents or 1.21% higher at 8.4 cents.
