The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy has said she doesn't think she's "beautiful enough" to star in films.
The 24-year-old actress has received critical acclaim for her captivating performance as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the hit Netflix drama, and despite securing lead roles in films The Witch, and Jane Austen adaptation Emma, she doesn't think she meets Hollywood's so-called beauty standards supposedly required for the big screen.
"I have never and I don't think I will ever think of myself as beautiful," Taylor-Joy told The Sun. "I don't think I'm beautiful enough to be in films. It sounds pathetic and my boyfriend warns me people will think I'm an absolute d*** for saying these things, but I just think I’m weird-looking."
She continued: "I won't go to the cinema to watch my own film, I’ll watch it before. The beauty of being in your own skin is that you don't have to look at your own face."
The star, who was signed to Storm Management modelling agency when she was 16, also revealed she "genuinely had a panic attack" while filming Emma.
"I thought, 'I am the first ugly Emma and I can't do this', because the first line in the movie is, "I'm handsome, clever and rich'," she explained.
Taylor-Joy's impressive acting credits also include M. Night Shyamalan's blockbusters Glass and Split, BBC One's Peaky Blinders, and BBC's adaptation of Jessie Burton's best-selling novel The Miniaturist.
Her upcoming projects include Edgar Wright's thriller Last Night in Soho, in which she plays a young young woman passionate about fashion design, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, and a film adaptation of Francesca Lia Block's novel Weetzie Bat.
She will also be starring in Robert Eggers' Viking revenge saga The Northman, and Kristin Scott Thomas' romantic drama The Sea Change.
Meanwhile, the star recently spoke to Harper's Bazaar UK about her beauty habits, what's in her beauty bag, and how she has spent lockdown.
"I went back to London for the lockdown," she revealed. "I was with my loved one [her photographer partner Ben Seed] and two of our friends. It was really great to have that community. The first two weeks were very touch and go but I’m so grateful for the space I’ve been afforded while taking this break.
"I'm also grateful for my emotional growth during this period."
