PPG Completes Coating Pipeline Project

The protective and marine coatings business unit of PPG Industries Inc. (PPG) has completed an important coating pipeline project for Africa Pipe Industries. PPG Industries supplied internal and external coatings for a 46 kilometer long, 2.1-meter diameter pipeline installed for South African utility Rand Water.

PPG Industries’ SIGMALINE 523 coating and SIGMALINE 855 coating was applied for internal lining and external protection respectively, on the pipeline installed at Sasolburg in the Free State region. The combination of these coatings delivers a high level protection of both surfaces against corrosion and spoilage of the pipeline content. SIGMALINE products are preferred due to their short manufacturing cycle which gives quick curing time and for its of single-coat application property.

SIGMALINE 855 coating, in particular, offers excellent corrosion and water resistance with a superior aesthetic finish. This coating also holds unique features including excellent abrasion and impact resistance against minor damage during handling, transporting and installation along with ultraviolet (:UV) radiation protection while waiting for onsite installation.

SIGMALINE 523 coating which is applied for internal lining on the pipeline, is BS 6920 2 certified for potable drinking water. The specialty of this coating is that it is resistant to bacterial growth, fast-curing and can be applied to rotating pipes offering easy application on field joints after installation welding.
