His Dark Materials fans will be pretty chuffed to see that new pictures from the upcoming season 2 have been released.

The second series returns to the BBC this month, and there's going to be a tonne of surprises - including a Fleabag reunion as Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be joining the cast. The Fleabag star will be voicing the dæmon of Andrew Scott’s Colonel John Parry. Revealing the reunion, Andrew Scott sweetly said he's "really thrilled about that because it’s all about companionship and friendship and loyalty, and that’s what I feel about Phoebe in real life."

When is His Dark Materials season 2 being released?

Not long to go now! The BBC has confirmed that the show will be back on Sunday, 15 November. It'll premiere at 9pm on BBC One, so set your alarms now!

Who will star in His Dark Materials season 2?

Based on the second book in Sir Philip Pullman's trilogy, The Subtle Knife, Dafne Keen will be back in the lead role as Lyra Belacqua. The cast also features The Affair and Luther star Ruth Wilson as Lyra's mother Mrs Coulter, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda as adventurer Lee Scoresby and newcomer Amir Wilson as Will Parry.

There'll also be a host of exciting new faces joining the second season, including Fleabag's Andrew Scott as Will's dad Colonel John Parry, Turn Up Charlie's Jade Anouka as witch queen Ruta Skadi, Peaky Blinders star Simone Kirby as Mary Malone and also Golden Globe-winning actor Terence Stamp as Giacomo Paradisi.

How did coronavirus impact His Dark Materials season 2?

X-Men's James McAvoy, who plays Lyra's father Lord Asriel, won't appear in the second series after his scenes were cut due to the coronavirus pandemic. He was due to appear in a self-contained episode, but that's been scrapped and the series will now be made up of seven episodes instead of eight.

Executive producer Jane Tranter said, "It was separate from the other seven episodes because it was a standalone episode which Jack had written with the blessing and input of Philip Pullman, which looked at what Lord Asriel had been doing between going through the anomaly at the end of season one and when we see Lord Asriel at the beginning of book three The Amber Spyglass.

"It meant that we could continue post-production on the seven episodes that make up The Subtle Knife and just put the Asriel standalone episode to one side and maybe in the future we can revisit it as a standalone," she continued.

Is there a trailer for His Dark Materials season 2?

Yes, and it's looks so unbelievably good, with the return of Ruth Wilson as terrifying and well-suited Mrs Coulter, along with a lot more Andrew Scott. Big result.

The end of season one saw Lyra follow Lord Asriel into a new world, and the trailer shows her in the abandoned city of Cittàgazze, where she ends up meeting Will. We also finally get to see Andrew Scott in the role of Colonel John Parry as he tries to track down Lyra and Will with Lee Scoresby.

His Dark Materials season two premieres on BBC One on Sunday 15th November at 9pm.
