How to overcome workplace insecurity

In recent years, workplace insecurity has risen in prominence and number – recession-driven layoffs, restructures, and modifications have forced people to take on extra work or duties, or even change roles altogether. This has had a profound toll on people’s mental health – this article will endeavor to deliver five tips that will help alleviate your insecurities at work.

1. Embrace your insecurities

Often times, things that you view as distasteful or unwanted can help boost yourself and your work – turn a fear into positive, powerful motivation: the biggest successes have come from people powered by a drive morphed from a deep personal insecurity.

2. Get objective

It’s easy to feel like the magnitude of your problem is overwhelming, and that there is nothing you can do to help it. When facing your problem, one of the ways you can use to tackle it is to think from a friend’s point of view. What kind of advice would you give yourself if you were a friend, or, if you had a friend with this problem, what kind of advice would you give them? Taking a step back can help you gain some perspective on the issue.

3. Change

The second step, after identifying the body of your insecurity, is to tackle it. Instead of spending every waking moment at work worrying about redundancy, set short term goals to change what you can. Become more competite by developing new skills in demand by the market by self-reading books on that topic, picking up local courses, or talking to people in that profession.

4. Celebrate success

Reward yourself! Even your smallest successes – a completion of a project, a good meeting with your superiors – deserve recognition, so make sure you encourage yourself by thinking positively about all of your achievements.

5. Good company

Surround yourself with positive people who are nurturing and supportive, during both good and bad times. This means staying with the friends and family that will compliment you when you deserve it, and offer genuine help – even if it’s just the offer of company, or a listening ear – when you need it.

Employing these five tips will help you to overcome any workplace insecurities you might have, allowing you to push forward and succeed in your future endeavours!
