Michael Carrick rejects claim Ralf Rangnick picked Manchester United team for Chelsea draw

Manchester United caretaker boss Michael Carrick insisted there is no truth in the idea that incoming coach Ralf Rangnick picked his side for Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Rangnick is expected to be appointed as interim head coach until the end of the season in the coming days, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.

There appeared to be shades of the German’s philosophy in United’s approach at Stamford Bridge, with Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes employed as an energetic, pressing front-three and Cristiano Ronaldo left on the bench.

That prompted former United defender Gary Neville to suggest Rangnick is already having an influence on team selection, tweeting: “I’ve a feeling the incoming manager has picked that team as it’s a huge departure from midweek and what they’ve been doing.”

However, Carrick denied that suggestion in his post-match press conference saying: “That’s not the case, no.”

The 40-year-old also said he was not yet sure whether Rangnick would be appointed in time to take charge of Thursday’s clash with an improving Arsenal.

“As of now, I haven’t got any more news for you, really,” Carrick added. “I was purely focused on the game, there was enough in my head to prepare for this. I’m sure I’ll be updated and aware in the next few days but as of now I haven’t got any more to give you.”
