Married Nurse Allegedly Sneaked Abortion Pills Inside Body of Pregnant Girlfriend During Sex: Police

A Washington State man faces several charges including rape and assault after he allegedly inserted several abortion pills into his girlfriend's body during sex, per authorities.

David Coots, 42, of Gig Harbor, Wash., was arrested on March 11 and charged with second-degree assault, third-degree rape and tampering with a witness, online court records show.

Coots, a married father of five, was the primary care provider for the alleged victim and is accused of persistently pursuing a romantic relationship with her before beginning an affair with her last year, according to charging documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Coots allegedly told the woman that he would soon be getting a divorce, according to charging documents.

In January, the woman learned that she was pregnant. When she told Coots, she alleged he seemed "overly supportive," charging documents state.

The woman told police she believes Coots tried to induce an abortion on at least two occasions, including one on Jan. 26 when he allegedly tried to force her to drink a coffee that she thinks was drugged, per the documents.

The following day, the woman alleged that during sex, Coots was “abnormally aggressive,” and engaged in sexual activities he “has never done before,” which made her uncomfortable, per the documents. She also alleged that he tried to prevent her from going to the bathroom for a period of time and asked her to stay in her home that day.

The charging documents allege that the woman went to the bathroom after Coots left. After using the bathroom, she discovered a pill on the toilet paper she used and later found a second pill and “some kind of foil," according to the documents. When she confronted Coots about the pills, he initially refused to say anything, the documents allege.

He later allegedly admitted that they were pills that cause miscarriages and he had inserted four of them into her body during sex, the woman told authorities, according to the charging documents.

It's unclear from the charging documents if the woman had a miscarriage.

Over the next few days, Coots repeatedly tried to talk to the woman and also apologized to her, she alleged in the documents. He allegedly tried to pay her off — with a $2,000 payment, which she sent back — in an attempt to stop her from going to the police, the woman claimed.

On Feb. 1, Coots’ wife, Melissa Coots, contacted the woman and went to her home even after the woman said she didn't want to speak with her, the documents allege. Melissa, 39, allegedly told the woman that alerting the police would destroy her life as well as David's. According to the woman, Melissa said she had previously been to her house, which frightened the woman, the documents allege.

On Feb. 5, David was allegedly “relentlessly” messaging the woman until approximately one minute before officers served him with a protection order, authorities said in the charging documents. 

On March 11, David allegedly contacted the woman and left gifts and flowers outside her home “professing his love for her,” per the documents. He was arrested for allegedly violating his protection order.

Melissa has been charged with tampering with a witness, according to online court records. She has been summoned to appear for her arraignment on March 29, the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office tells PEOPLE. It's not clear if she has reached an attorney.

David has entered not guilty pleas, court records show. He was released on a $500,000 bond.
