China targets Europe's farmers, and not its automakers, in response to EU tariffs on electric cars
The Chinese government is taking aim at European farmers instead of German automakers by launching an investigation into European Union pork imports, just days after the EU said it plans to impose provisional tariffs on China-made electric vehicles. The Commerce Ministry didn't mention the EV tariffs when it announced Monday that it is opening an anti-dumping investigation into pork from Europe, but the move is widely seen as a response to the EU move on electric cars.

Tesla begins legal bid to OK Elon Musk's mega-pay
STORY: Tesla has begun the legal battle to get approval for Elon Musk’s $56 billion pay deal. Shareholders last week approved the package - a record sum in U.S. corporate history. But the firm still has to convince the court that first voided the payout. Delaware judge Kathaleen McCormick ruled that the process leading up to package had been controlled by Musk. She said Tesla also concealed from shareholders key details about the targets he had been required to hit. Now the EV maker says it has fixed those problems. Besides the vote, the pay deal was reviewed by a special committee of the board, and the firm has provided hundreds of pages of added information. Though the sum seems enormous, WealthWise Financial boss Noreen Gilbert says Musk should have been paid: “The pay package had actually been agreed upon years prior, based on metrics that Elon Musk had to make good on, and he had made good on all of those metrics. So the fact is he should have been paid that amount, he jumped through all the hoops to make that happen”. Tesla has now written to judge McCormick, asking that parties to the legal dispute over the pay now set out their takes on the shareholder approval. One shareholder who brought the case against the package has already said he thinks the vote has “no legal effect”.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Pork suppliers from South America and the U.S. could gain market share in China if Beijing restricts imports from the European Union in response to escalating trade tensions, traders and analysts said. Russia, increasingly a close trading partner of China that started exporting pork to China in February, could also step up meat shipments. China's commerce ministry said on Monday it had opened an anti-dumping investigation into imported pork and its by-products from the EU, after the bloc imposed anti-subsidy duties on Chinese-made electric cars.

Analysis-Global gasoline refining margins slump on slow summer driving season
Oil refiners are making less money selling their gasoline as demand during the peak summer driving season has fallen short of what they expected when many of them boosted production. In the U.S., the world's largest gasoline market, refiners ramped up sharply, expecting demand that never materialized. U.S. gasoline demand was 9 million barrels per day (bpd) in the first week of June, 1.7% below last year and seasonally the lowest since 2021, government data showed.

China's factories, property sector sap rebound
STORY: China’s uncertain economic recovery appears to have hit a few more bumps. Figures out Monday showed activity at factories sputtering. Industrial output grew 5.6% in May - that was down on a month before, and below analyst forecasts. The country’s ailing real estate sector was another drag. Property investment fell over 10% on the year over January to May. New home prices also dropped for an 11th straight month, and saw their steepest fall in almost a decade. That’s all despite government and central bank efforts to revive the sector, including support for affordable housing. Property used to account for about a quarter of the country’s economy, but has been sapped by a regulatory crackdown on the debts built up by developers. Goldman Sachs estimates China is now saddled with unsold homes worth close to $2 trillion. There were some brighter spots in May’s figures, however. Retail sales rose 3.7% on the year, picking up steam and beating forecasts. The employment market also held steady at least, with the jobless rate unchanged. Even so, economists say the latest numbers will add to pressure on Beijing to shore up growth. Policymakers have vowed to create more jobs though major projects, and pledged steps to boost domestic demand.

(Reuters) -Fisker filed for bankruptcy protection late on Monday, as the U.S. electric-vehicle maker looks to salvage its operations by selling assets and restructuring its debt after burning through cash in an attempt to ramp up production of its Ocean SUVs. The company, founded by automotive designer Henrik Fisker, flagged doubts about its ability to remain in business in February and later failed to secure an investment from a big automaker, forcing it to rein in operations. The collapse of its talks with the automaker - which Reuters had reported to be Nissan - meant that it was denied $350 million in funding from an unnamed investor that was contingent on the automaker's investment and forced Fisker to explore options.

Toyota shareholders voted Tuesday in support of all the company's proposals, including keeping Akio Toyoda, grandson of the Japanese automaker’s founder, as chairman on the board.
