M1 to support Jurong Port in digital smart port transformation

SINGAPORE (Dec 5): M1 will provide Jurong Port with a terminal-wide wireless private network, to support the transformation of the port into an advanced digital smart port.

An Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Wednesday between Willis Sim, M1’s chief corporate sales and solutions officer, and Desmond Lim, Jurong Port’s chief commercial officer and chairman of technology development committee.

To promote greater connectivity and operational efficiency in Jurong Port, M1 will use its Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) to enhance the network coverage in the terminal and along the port’s berths, using licensed 4G spectrum for the wireless private network.

“The heterogenous network solution is aligned with Jurong Port’s strategic technology roadmap and this partnership will further equip Jurong Port with the technological platform for the Internet-of-Things (IoT)/wearables endeavours and autonomous drones exploration.” says Sam Wei Hoong, vice-president of Information Technology, Jurong Port.

M1 will help improve connectivity in the port by providing wireless backhaul network connectivity to the warehouses and access-layer in individual warehouses. The port will also enjoy wireless access solution with enhanced 4G coverage and WiFi network along the berths and 4G connectivity to the port’s data centre via a private Access Point Name (APN), as well as round-the-clock monitoring and technical support provided by M1.

Using 4G spectrum to support a wireless private network not only eliminates potential interference issues but also allows the port to tap on the private network’s security features for internal communications and transmissions, as well as to leverage on the cellular technologies for testing on smart applications, sensors, analytics and other IoT applications.
