LTA to transform Tampines into a walking and cycling town by 2022

Tampines will be transformed into Singapore’s second walking and cycling town after Ang Mo Kio by 2022, according to plans revealed by Land Transport Authority (LTA).

LTA will triple the existing 6.9km cycling path network in Tampines Town to about 21km. This network will connect the three MRT stations — Tampines, Tampines East and Tampines West — to homes, schools and other key amenities such as our Tampines Hub, community centres and food centres.

In addition, LTA will build trunk cycling routes between Tampines and neighbouring towns such as Pasir Ris and Simei, as well as to the Changi Business Park and Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Centre (EXPO).

Pedestrians will also stand to benefit from the plans. LTA is looking to introduce new features, such as wider footpaths and barrier-free ramps. Thus, it will be safer and more convenient for pedestrians, especially those with mobility constraints.

LTA will continue to work closely with the Centre for Liveable Cities and the Tampines community to draw up the blueprints. Subsequently, LTA will call for a design consultancy tender and aims to complete the transformation of Tampines by 2022.
