Iain Duncan Smith has provoked anger after boldly claiming ‘We’re all Brexiteers now’ in an interview on BBC Radio 4.

The former work and pensions secretary, an outspoken supporter for the Leave campaign, made the remarks on the Today programme as he was asked who should become the next International Development Secretary in the wake of Priti Patel’s departure.

‘I think we are all Brexiteers now,’ he replied.

‘So the question is to what degree do you want someone in that job to be in support of [Brexit secretary] David Davis and others?

‘And I think therefore the balance on having strong Brexit views is one that in all probability the prime minister will certainly look for.’

But if the response to his comments are anything to go by, it seems that we’re most definitely *not* all Brexiteers.

‘We’re all Brexiteers now says Iain Duncan Smith. No. No, we’re not, you faux patriotic Extremist goon.’, one user wrote on Twitter.

Another said: ‘We are all Brexiteers now,” says Iain Duncan Smith on the Toady prog. Er, no we’re not, you bald fraud.’

Duncan Smith has since clarified his comments, and denied that he was intending to claim that the entire of the UK is supporting Brexit.

‘He meant that all members of the government and the wider party understand that Brexit must be carried out according to the referendum vote’, a spokesperson told BuzzFeed.

Duncan Smith’s appearance on the Today Show came only hours after Priti Patel resigned as International Development Secretary, having been ordered back from an official trip in Africa when it emerged she held a series of unauthorised meetings with Israeli officials.

With the role now vacant, Theresa May is now forced to appointment a replacement – with Tory MPs Penny Mordaunt and Rory Stewart believed to be among the front runners.
