Lazada Group, a Southeast Asia e-commerce firm backed by Alibaba Group, announced Pierre Poignant will succeed Lucy Peng as chief executive officer starting immediately.

Peng, 45, will remain as executive chairwoman of Lazada, the company said in a statement on Thursday (13 December). Peng, who is one of the founders of Alibaba, was also formerly executive chairman at Ant Financial.

Alibaba, the controlling shareholder of Lazada, in March invested an additional US$2 billion in Lazada, bringing its total investment to US$4 billion. Peng, who is executive chairman of Lazada, took on the additional role of CEO, replacing founder Max Bittner.

Poignant was appointed executive president of Lazada in August. He joined the company in 2012, and has assumed several roles including chief operating officer, overseeing customer service, supply chain and content production.

In his new role, Poignant will lead the company’s strategic development and manage Lazada’s operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, while working closely with country CEOs and regional functional team leaders.
