What we know so far about Seth Rogen's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie

From Digital Spy

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a staple in every '90s kid's collective nostalgia. What could be more enjoyable than turtles who talk and fight crime while living in a sewer taking orders from a mutant talking rat and munching on pizza?

Nothing.

Unfortunately, the recent attempts to reboot it for a new generation fell flat. The last two move adaptations were live-action and neither fared well with critics.

But this time around there's a cracking team behind the feature film: Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. Also helping it along is the fact that it will be animated.

The 1984 comic book was adapted first as a cartoon series by Nickelodeon from 1987-1996 and then revamped as a CGI cartoon in 2012. Since 1990, the franchise has made $1.15 billion from six movies at three different studios.

Now, the newest adaptation has been touted as "next-level" by Brian Robbins, President of Kids & Family for ViacomCBS. He said: "Adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humour and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property.

"I’m looking forward to see what they do, and I know that Ramsey Naito and her team are excited to take the Nick Animation Studio into another great direction with their first-ever CG-animated theatrical."

The 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adaptation performed well at the box office, despite its universal dismissal by critics. The 2016 film, on the other hand, received mixed reviews but performed poorly commercially, signalling the nail in the coffin for film adaptations of the beloved story.

This third feature-length adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will also be distributed by Paramount who, according to Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, have taken on board the disastrous outing of the previous two films.

He said: "The fans' reactions, plus and minus, to the 2014 [and] 2016 movie, Paramount I believe had taken those [reactions] to heart and where they'd like to see the next reiteration go to, so I think it's going to be a next-level type of stuff which I'm excited to see." (via ComicBook.com)

Jeff Rowe will be directing, and has taken to Twitter to express his excitement about the project. He wrote: "When I was five my best friends were four sewer-dwelling, pizza-eating, crime-fighting turtles named after Renaissance artists. It’s my absolute pleasure to join Nickelodeon, Brendan O'Brien and the team at Point Grey in reintroducing them to the world."

It is likely that the new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be a total reboot, ignoring what happened in the 2014 and 2016 movies. In June 2018, Paramount first announced work on a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and billed it as a reboot.

Though much has changed in the last two years, this will likely remain the same. With Seth Rogen and his mates behind the scenes, though, it's bound to at least be funny.
