Job Search for Fresh Grads: 4 challenges you’ll face

Making that move from university to your post-graduation life is one of the most exciting things you will ever do. Before you lies a world full of possibilities but this vision doesn’t always pan out the way you want it to be. In this increasingly competitive industry, fresh graduates frequently face challenges in landing a job. Here are four common challenges and what you can do to overcome them.

No ‘real world’ experience

Compared with candidates with zero experience, many employers prefer those with at least a little industry experience. Despite graduating with a degree with a presumable good understanding of the industry you’re applying to, having real-world job knowledge will make you more marketable. Go for internships during your course of studies. Not only will these enable you to gain some real-world experience, you will also be able to build up a network of industry contacts that might come in handy when you finally step out into the workforce.

Unrealistic expectations

You have a degree – great for you! But so do most of the other candidates interviewing for the same position you desire. Without any experience or connections, chances of landing your dream job fresh out of university are slim. Be realistic about where your current skill set can take you and find a vocation that will allow you to grow professionally, even if it means starting low in rank. Work hard, work smart, and you’ll find your way up in no time.

Poor interview skills

Unfortunately, this is something that was not taught adequately in school. Many graduates often assume that if they possess a degree, the necessary skills and display a drive to succeed, they will land a job. Truth is, the interview process is tremendously vital and you are evaluated every step of the way – starting from the time you enter the interview room until you send (or forget to send) a thank-you email. One wrong move equates to you missing out on an opportunity. Hence, it is a good idea to practise interviewing with a friend or career coach, so you’ll have a higher chance at acing those interviews.

Lack of negotiation skills

Majority of graduates have no idea how to properly negotiate their pay packages, with most afraid that the jobs will not be offered to them should they request for higher wages. The reality is that most employers expect you to negotiate. It is industry practice to offer candidates a sum that is lower than what they expect to pay, which leaves room for negotiation. First and foremost, find out the industry standard, so you know where you stand. Speak to friends who have successfully negotiated for their benefits at work and emulate how they did it, if possible. Take time to work on your negotiation skills and be sure to work it to your advantage; your future self will thank you.
