HK vs Singapore: Which is Asia's most liveable city?

Bustling and ever lively, Hong Kong is widely known as one of Asia's most-liveable cities.

But socio-political instability may have dimmed the appeal of the Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR) as a place to live and work, with Hong Kong taking a tumble down prominent liveability rankings in recent months.

The Occupy Central movement, which spanned from September to December 2014, saw tens of thousands of residents occupying major roads, bringing parts of the city to a standstill.

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) annual liveability index, the former British colony fell 15 places to 46th position globally on the back of weakening social stability. This allowed arch regional rival Singapore to come close to closing the liveability gap, with the gleaming city-state of skyscrapers moving up two spots to 49th, the report released in August said.

In another survey issued in January this year, Singapore upstaged Hong Kong to claim the crown as the world's best city for the 16th year running. Hong Kong, meanwhile, fell 16 spots to the 33rd position in an annual report from human resource consulting firm ECA International that evaluated 450 locations globally on factors including climate and availability of health services.
