The Morning Show's Gugu Mbatha-Raw will star in BBC One's adaptation of JP Delaney's best-selling novel The Girl Before, alongside David Oyelowo.

The British actress will take the lead in the limited four-part series, adapted from Delaney's thriller of the same title, playing Jane, a woman who moves into a beautiful, ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect (Oyelowo).

BBC's synopsis adds: "There's just one catch: occupants have to abide by his list of exacting rules. Jane starts to feel the house changing her in unexpected ways, but when she makes the shocking discovery that her predecessor Emma died in the house, she’s forced to confront unnerving similarities. As the two women’s timelines interweave, Jane begins to question if her fate will be the same as the girl before…"

Mbatha-Raw said in a statement: "I'm so excited to work with this amazing team on such a compelling story in my debut role as actor/producer."

Oyelowo added: "This story is mind-bending in its clever construction and intricacy. I can’t wait to see it, let alone be in it. Plus, I’d go anywhere to work with my friend Gugu again."

It was recently announced that Mbatha-Raw was teaming up with Reese Witherspoon again, following the success of their award-winning series The Morning Show. The actresses also appeared in Disney's A Wrinkle In Time.

Mbatha-Raw will star in Surface, a new psychological drama which is being produced by Witherspoon and her production company, Hello Sunshine. Surface has been given the green light by Apple TV, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed.

The series will comprise of eight episodes and will be a thriller, however the plot is being kept under wraps for the moment, with just the news that High Fidelity's co-creator Veronica West is behind the concept. Mbatha-Raw will also serve as executive producer on the series.

The Girl Before will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and HBO Max in the US.
