Giant to absorb 1% GST hike in Singapore for 700 essential products for six months in 2024
Giant joins the FairPrice Group and IKEA Singapore, both of which also announced similar GST absorption programmes.
SINGAPORE — Supermarket chain Giant will absorb the one per cent rate increase in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for 700 products from 1 January to 30 June 2024.
It announced on Tuesday (26 December) that this will be for 700 essential products across its key categories, including "fresh and grocery", "personal care" and "household essentials".
“As one of Singapore's leading value retailers, our top priority is to ensure that essential products remain affordable. By absorbing the GST increase over a six-month period, coupled with Giant's ongoing initiatives like Lower Prices That Last, 4% Senior Citizen Discount, and yuu Rewards Club, we hope that Singaporeans can continue to shop and enjoy their favourite essential products in the new year," said Yoep Man, Managing Director for Food, Singapore, for DFI Retail Group, which operates Giant.

DFI said that those 700 essential products have been carefully selected based on customer feedback and data.

● Royal Gala Apples
● Meadows Milk 1L
● Meadows Home Bathroom Tissue
● Meadows Home Laundry Liquid
● Meadows Assorted Biscuit
● Meadows Canned Tuna
● Meadows Mayonnaise
● Meadows Granulated Sugar
● Meadows Shredded Mozzarella
● Meadows Ice Cream 1L
● Meadows Pasta Sauce
● Meadows Home Aluminium Foil
● Vitapet Dry Cat Food
● Yu Pin King Raw Peanuts
Giant joins the FairPrice Group, which also announced a similar programme in November. Home furnishing retailer IKEA has also announced its initiative to absorb the GST rate hike.
Senior citizen discount
Meanwhile, Giant's ongoing four per cent storewide discount for senior citizens every Thursday will be in effect for the entire year of 2024.
Giant will also be continuing its Lower Prices That Last campaign which was launched in 2020 "with the goal of providing Singaporeans with essential groceries products that are fresh, high quality and affordable".
Singaporeans can enjoy these savings by signing up for the yuu Rewards Club and earn points for every dollar spent at the same time. The accumulated points can be redeemed for rewards at over 1,000 places including Giant, Cold Storage, CS Fresh, Guardian, and 7-Eleven.
