The future is here: Driverless vehicles set to transform Singapore’s transport

The system would reach full throttle by 2016.

Hitting two birds in one stone, the LTA and MoT jointly announced the upcoming launch of self-driving transport vehicles in Singapore, with the aim of alleviating land transport’s two most pressing constraints--land and manpower.

According to a statement by the transport authority, trials have already started in one-north, while upcoming trials await Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa and West Coast Highway.

“The trials will help us shape the mobility concepts which can meet Singapore’s needs, and also gain valuable insights into how we can design our towns of the future to take advantage of this technology,” said Pang Kin Keong, chairman of the committee on autonomous road transport in Singapore.

Meanwhile, to assure safety during trials, all vehicle prototypes currently being tested are fitted with data loggers to record information such as the date and time of tests, vehicle speed, and travel route.
