Chicago Fire has introduced paramedic Gianna Mackey for season 9, but star Adriyan Rae could have appeared in the universe sooner.

During a recent interview with Digital Spy – where she discussed Gianna's eventful start to life at Firehouse 51 – Rae revealed that she auditioned for both Chicago PD and Chicago Med before landing the series regular role on Chicago Fire.

"With COVID, it was a self-tape. There was no in-person," she explained when asked about the audition process for Chicago Fire.

"I've been self-taping for Chicago Med and PD for two years prior to 2020, and I did a self-tape [for Chicago Fire] and I was like, 'OK, I've done so many before'. And then we heard some feedback. They got back to us quickly, and they seemed like they were interested.

"Then we did another self-tape, then we had a meeting with the writer, and then we had a producer Zoom session which is very different – I had never done one of those before. The audition process was all virtual, and very COVID-friendly and safe!"

Rae said that the roles she previously went for were a variety of different ones.

"Some were major," she shared. "One was a series regular. One was just a guest star. A couple were recurring guest star."

The star also discussed the experience of joining a long-running series like Chicago Fire during its ninth season on TV.

"When you first book it, it's intimidating," she said. "But after you get there and you meet the people, you realise how welcoming they are and then you get to enjoy the fact that you booked Chicago Fire and get to be part of such a great franchise.

"It's honestly a blessing and everybody is so, so, so kind."

Chicago Fire airs on NBC in the US and on Sky Witness in the UK.
