The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday charged an auditing firm hired by Trump Media and Technology Group just 37 days ago with “massive fraud” — though not for any work it performed for former President Donald Trump’s media company. The SEC charged the accounting firm BF Borgers and its owner, Benjamin F. Borgers, with “deliberate and systematic failures” in more than 1,500 audits. To settle the SEC charges, BF Borgers agreed to pay a $12 million fine while its owner agreed to pay a fine of $2 million, according to the SEC.

Record loss for Russia's Gazprom as European market closed
Russian energy giant Gazprom said Thursday it suffered a record annual loss last year as the European market was practically shut to its gas exports due to sanctions over Moscow's military operation in Ukraine.Exports to Europe have long been Gazprom's top earnings source, but following the start of the conflict in Ukraine European nations sought to reduce their reliance upon Russian natural gas.

Insurer Chubb prepares to pay $350 mln in Baltimore bridge collapse, WSJ reports
Chubb, the insurer of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed in March, is preparing to make a $350 million payout to the state of Maryland, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. The payment is expected to be authorized within weeks, the report said, citing a statement from Henry Daar, head of property claims North America for WTW, the bridge's broker. The $350-million payout could be the first of many related to the disaster that analysts have said might cost insurers up to $4 billion, making it a record shipping insurance loss.

The start-up of LNG Canada, the country's first such export terminal, is likely to strain its natural gas supplies for multiple years and force producers to reduce exports to the U.S., where demand for the fuel is record high, companies said. Shell-led LNG Canada has begun testing its C$40-billion British Columbia terminal ahead of commercial operations starting in mid-2025. The terminal will process up to 2 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd), representing 11% of current Canadian gas output.

India cenbank proposes tighter rules for project finance
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday proposed to lenders that they set aside higher provisions for under-construction infrastructure projects and asked them to ensure strict monitoring of any emerging stress. The RBI said it issued draft guidelines "taking into account the experience of banks with regard to financing of project loans". Indian banks had seen large defaults across infrastructure loans starting 2012-2013 on account of exuberant lending, which led to a strain on the country's banking system.

Strong copper price reviving Peru's mining mojo, minister says
Peru's dented mining mojo, hit by years of political turmoil in the Andean country, is being buoyed by strong copper prices and a bullish outlook they will rise further, helping lure back investor interest, the country's mining minister said on Friday. "The price of copper is a great attraction," Romulo Mucho, told Reuters in an interview at his office, a reference to prices that hit two-year peaks of $10,208 a metric ton this week, close to the record high of $10,845 in March 2022. Goldman Sachs earlier in the day hiked its year-end price target to $12,000 per ton, from $10,000 previously, citing the copper market's path into scarcity and expectations of a larger deficit of the key metal needed for electrification.

Morgan Stanley, Frasers settle UK lawsuit over $1 bln margin call
British retail tycoon Mike Ashley's Frasers Group has withdrawn its London lawsuit against Morgan Stanley over a nearly $1 billion margin call, a spokesperson for the Wall Street bank said on Friday. Frasers had sued Morgan Stanley for about 47 million euros ($50.5 million) after the bank imposed the margin call – security to cover possible losses – on the retailer's trading position in German fashion group Hugo Boss in May 2021. Ashley, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes to be worth $5.1 billion, gave evidence at the trial at London's High Court in February that the demand for collateral left him in "total shock".

Canadian Natural Resources considering major expansion of Horizon oil sands mine
(Reuters) -Canada's largest oil and gas producer Canadian Natural Resources is looking at opportunities to significantly increase bitumen output at its main oil sands mine, the company said on Thursday. President Scott Stauth said the company is considering a 195,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) expansion at its Horizon mining and upgrading plant in northern Alberta through new extraction and treatment processes. Previously the company said it could add 75,000 bpd of bitumen, but Stauth said Canadian Natural had been able to enhance engineering and scale up the processes.

Magna lags profit estimates, cuts annual sales forecast on supply chain snags
(Reuters) -Canada's Magna International missed first-quarter profit estimates and cut its full-year overall sales forecast on Friday, as auto parts suppliers navigate ongoing supply constraints and bumpy demand for electric vehicles. Auto parts suppliers have been struggling with lower-than-expected demand for their EV components, as carmakers shift their focus toward producing affordable hybrid vehicles instead. Magna, which produces powertrains, along with assembling complete vehicles, signed agreements with Fisker in 2020 to engineer and manufacture its Ocean SUV.

WRAPUP 4-US job gains fewest in six months as labor market cools
U.S. job growth slowed more than expected in April and the increase in annual wages fell below 4.0% for the first time in nearly three years, but it is probably too early to expect that the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates before September as the labor market remains fairly tight. The Labor Department's closely watched employment report on Friday also showed the unemployment rate rising to 3.9% from 3.8% in March amid increasing labor supply.
