The family of DMX has warned fans not to donate to people or organisations claiming to be raising funds for his funeral.

The rapper – real name Earl Simmons – died on Friday (9 April) aged 50, a week after he suffered a heart attack that left him on life support.

In the wake of his death, his family has told TMZ that any claims from people or online fundraisers alleging that they need financial assistance to pay for his funeral are false.

According to the publication, DMX’s relatives are aware that many scammers may be soliciting money in DMX’s name. They have also urged his fans to be wary of any merchandise that is being sold under the “authorisation” of the Grammy nominee’s family.

His family has confirmed that they are not selling any DMX merchandise at this time.

When his death was announced last week, fans were quick to gather outside the White Plains Hospital in New York – where DMX had been staying – in order to pay tribute to the late rapper.

A number of celebrities honoured DMX in emotional posts shared on social media.

Rapper and actor Eve, who was on the Ruff Ryders label with DMX, wrote a tribute to “my dog” on her Instagram.

“I know that you are in the place of peace you deserve,” she wrote. “I will be forever grateful to have known you. You were one of the most special people I have ever met. Full of humor, talent, wisdom and love and most of all loyalty. This world has lost a REAL ONE but the heavens have gained an ANGEL.”

Actors Martin Lawrence and Viola Davis were also among those to pay their respects on social media.
