What's A Juice Cleanse?

A juice cleanse or detox programme usually consists of a fixed number of days where you consume nothing but juice.

Instead of a full fast with just water consumption, a juice cleanse is considered less extreme and helps to also fill your body with nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables.

Do We Really Need A Detox?

The subject is up to debate. Some health experts have said that our body knows how to detoxify itself and there's no need to stay away from food to do it.

Whereas for some, they point out that having a few days of juice fast is an excellent way to get someone to kickstart a new diet as you slowly shift your palate away from the fatty and processed food you are used to.

Those who've been through a fast usually have positive comments about such a programme, reportedly making them feel lighter and more alert mentally.

Some might feel that going on a liquid diet is pretty difficult and may be potentially unsafe for the body.

As long as you do not go on long periods without food (more than 5 days) and still drink your juice, a juice cleanse is seldom harmful.

You may want to check with a doctor first if you have pre-existing health issues such as diabetes or kidney problems.

If you find it hard to go on a full juice fast, drinking fruit and vegetable juice once in a while isn't gonna harm your body at all!

What's more, there's no written to rule to say that you need to follow any programmes religiously. Always listen to your body.

How Should I Decide On A Programme?

Some factors you might want to consider include the length of the juice fast you want to commit to, whether you prefer organic juice, cold-pressed juice, if you only want vegetable juice, the price point and the delivery charges.

My Personal Experience With A Juice Cleanse

To those who have never gone on a juice cleanse before, the idea of going 3 to 5 days without any solid food might sound daunting.

So here's my personal experience and some tips for you if you are deciding to go for it.

I tried out one of the 3-day juice cleanses last year with one of the juice bars. My initial idea was to hope to kickstart a diet after a period of feasting and hopefully lose some weight as well. I ordered a 3-day programme that came with 1 nut milk a day.

I remembered one of the first juices I had was a green juice made with apple, wheatgrass and celery and it actually tasted very good.

It was a 500ml bottle but after about half the bottle, I stopped drinking because I felt it was too sweet to chug down the entire bottle.

I was also afraid that I might become hungry later, so I could “save some juice” for later.

Until about 7pm, I started to become very hungry and lethargic, so I had the nut milk, which was supposed to be very filling and give you some protein.

It was super tasty and yes, finishing the entire bottle did fill me up. I went to sleep pretty early so that I didn't have to deal with the prospect of being hungry later.

On the second day, I was craving coffee pretty badly but continued with the juices. Frankly, I got quite tired of drinking the juices because I'm not the type to be taking sweet stuff all the time.

By the evening of day 2, I actually caved in and had some raw cashew nuts. To cut the long story short, I ate lunch on the third day.

So how did I feel about the cleanse? Well, I should say I'm kind of sitting on the fence and I think it really depends on your objective.

I feel that with the amount of sugar and nut milk I was taking, it's not really a weight loss solution. I probably should have gone on a vegetable juice cleanse since it contains a lot less sugar and loads of vitamins!

However, I do feel that it might make your skin clearer with all the nutrients it contains. If you ask me, I would do it again.

Tip: I think it's important to know your objective when it comes to going on a juice fast. It may take a few times to do it properly, since there could be times where you don't like the taste of some of the juice provided, or perhaps you might want to take up an “active” cleanse so that you can continue with your daily activities.

Money-Saving Tips

As you can see from the prices above, juicing isn't cheap! If you really want to save money and you plan to juice on a regular basis or incorporate juice into your everyday diet, I'd suggest you buy a cheap juicer and make it yourself.

You can buy vegetables (veggie juices are a lot healthier than fruit juices) in bulk and look for things that are on sale or that are seasonal to save money.

Try to make the juice with 80% vegetables and 20% fruits. You can even make juice when you get home from work and store it overnight in a glass bottle in the fridge so you'll have a fresh juice to take to work with you the next day.

You can save money on fruit and veggies by using a credit card that rewards you with cashback or points on your grocery purchases or a card that gives you discounts.
