Tip of the week

You now have less than a year to claim for mis-sold PPI.  Hannah Maundrell, editor in chief of warns that you should claim yourself and avoid paying a fat fee to a claims management company. Here’s her six tips on how to make a claim :

1. Contact the company that sold you PPI and explain why you believe you were mis-sold PPI.

2. Call your lender to follow up. You may be able to handle the rest of your claim over the phone.

3. Insist you will go to the Financial Ombudsman if you do not get a refund within 14 days.

4. If the company has denied that your PPI policy was mis-sold use a template letter.

5. If the company offers an inadequate settlement, write back to explain why they should pay you more.

6. If you’re not satisfied with the response, take the matter to the free Financial Ombudsman which will decide if you were mis-sold the policy.
