Yahoo Finance Congress welcomes 'Godse-bhakt' Chaurasia into party
Babulal Chaurasia, a former Hindu Mahasabha leader, who shot into limelight after he installed a statue of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse, has now joined the Congress party ahead of the Madhya Pradesh civic body elections.
Chaurasia had also organised a programme — 'Nathuram Godse's 70th Sacrifice Day' on November 15, 2019 — where he garlanded Godse’s photograph, performed an aarti and demanded that his final court statement be included in school syllabus. Godse was hanged in the Ambala Central Jail on November 15, 1949.
Chaurasia has earlier contested in the Gwalior municipal elections and won on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket.
Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath and other senior state Congress leaders welcomed Chaurasia, who was till now heavily criticised by the grand old party, with open arms.
It is ironic that the Congress which derides the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leaders as 'Godse lovers' is inducting those in the party who are actually the worshippers of the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi, the former president of Congress, often draws a contrast between Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse, and sees himself as a follower of the Mahatma and alleges that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a follower of Godse.
It is a different matter that Prime Minister Modi always hails the Mahatma and has never publicly praised Godse.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.
