Singtel falls up to 3% after $2.3 billion impairment
The impairment provisions would lead to the telecom giant reporting a net loss for the second-half period and a lower net profit for the full-year ended March 31, 2024, according to Singtel. Shares of Singtel were down 2.5% during Monday midday at S$2.35 per share, underperforming the broader benchmark stock index's 0.2% decline. "Singtel highlighted that this won't impact its dividend which is based on 70% to 90% of the underlying net income while the non-cash impairment charges will be booked as one offs," Maybank Research analyst Hussaini Saifee wrote in a research note on Monday.

UPDATE 2-Singtel sees $2.3 bln impairment hit, net loss in 2024 second-half
Singapore Telecommunications on Monday forecast non-cash impairment provisions of S$3.1 billion ($2.28 billion) for second-half of 2024 which would lead to the telecom giant reporting a net loss for the period. The company also warned that it would report a lower net profit for the full-year ended March 31, 2024. About S$2 billion of the total impairment provision originates from its mobile network operation unit, Optus' goodwill, Singtel, Southeast Asia's largest telecom operator, said in its filing.

Chinese property shares rally on stimulus hopes
HONG KONG (Reuters) -Shares of Chinese property developers rallied on Monday on speculation more stimulus measures are likely to be unveiled this week aimed at clearing inventory, boosting sales and lifting home purchase restrictions. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Mainland Properties Index jumped 4.3% in the morning session, while mainland China's CSI 300 Real Estate Index surged 6.9%, both to near four-month highs. Private property developers including Sunac China, and defaulted Shimao Group, KWG Group, Zhenro Properties, Fantasia and Kaisa Group, all gained more than 20%.

Chairman Reinold Geiger's investment holding company, L'Occitane Groupe SA, is considering an offer for the Hong-Kong listed firm's shares he does not already own, at HK$33 to HK$34 per share, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Earlier in the month, Reuters reported that Geiger was in advanced discussions with investors and lenders and was planning to make an attempt to buy out the company, months after he had shelved a previous attempt, according to two sources. A possible offer could value L'Occitane at about 6.5 billion euros ($6.95 billion), Bloomberg reported, adding that Blackstone Inc's tactical opportunities fund and Goldman Sachs Asset Management may provide around 1.6 billion euros in funding.

India's Chennai Petroleum sees two year delay in building new 180,000 bpd refinery
India's Chennai Petroleum Corp Ltd will build a 180,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery at Nagapattinam in Southern Tamil Nadu State by the end of 2027, two years later than initially planned, its head of finance Rohit Kumar Agrawala said on Monday. India, the world's third biggest oil consumer and producer, is expanding its refining capacity as it is expected to be the largest driver of global oil demand growth between 2023 and 2030, according to the International Energy Agency. Chennai Petroleum initially planned to complete the refinery by the end of 2025.

Morning Bid: The yen's mysterious move
Traders in Europe will be waking up to a nervy currency market after the yen's sharp reversal from its slide past 160 per dollar on Monday had some speculating Tokyo could be behind the move while the country was out on a holiday. The jump in the yen - which took it to a session-high of 156.55 per dollar - came just a few hours after it slid to the weaker side of 160 per dollar for the first time since 1990, marking a fresh 34-year low. Some said the rapid strengthening of the yen smelt like intervention, but markets will have to wait till Tuesday for any signals from authorities.
