Chelsea drew 0-0 Brighton amid the news that the west London club are set to withdraw from controversial plans to become founding members of a new European Super League.
Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea were one of 12 clubs - including the rest of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ - that announced on Sunday that they were planning to create a new competition as soon as possible.
The stunning news drew fierce criticism from fans, footballers and politicians alike, with Uefa, the Premier League and even Prime Minister Boris Johnson determined to put a stop to the proposals.
While there were no fans allowed inside Stamford Bridge for the match, hundreds turned up to protest outside the ground as Petr Cech went to calm the furious supporters.
Chelsea were held to a frustrating draw by Brighton, but that was enough to send them fourth - though the undoubted story of the night was the news that the Blues will withdraw from the Super League just 48 hours after its announcement.
