Cheap Gyms in Singapore – Affordable Gym Memberships Under $100 (UPDATED APR 2018)

Cheap Gyms in Singapore – Affordable Gym Memberships Under $100 (UPDATED APR 2018)

Whether you think of the gym as a second home or a dungeon full or torture devices, one thing is for sure – the cost of membership is the biggest pain point of working out.

Seriously, “no pain, no gain” used to mean something. Now, it just means “your pain, our gain” to brand-name gyms that charge $200 a month for basic membership. Don’t even get me started on the cost of personal training!

Thankfully, there are plenty of affordable gyms in Singapore for you to choose from. You can get a pretty good gym membership for less than $100 a month these days. And if you’re a commitment-phobe or just want to work out casually without locking yourself into a contract, some of these gyms also let you pay per entry.

ActiveSG Gym

Singapore’s largest group of public gyms, ActiveSG Gym is by far the cheapest gym option out there. Of course, because it has that distinction, it’s also the most crowded option on the list, which means you’ll run into gym hogs and have to wait a while to use equipment.

Generally, the older ActiveSG gyms are packed with cardio machines, but the newer ones like the Heartbeat@Bedok ActiveSG gym are more spacious, with nice new free weights, squat racks, benches and so on. If you go during super off-peak hours (like early mornings on weekdays), you MIGHT get a chance to use the nice equipment… but otherwise, there’s probably a queue for the squat rack.

If you’re just a casual gym user, you don’t need to pay for membership as the drop-in rate is really affordable.

However, if you have a flexible work schedule you might want to go for the off-peak membership (weekdays before 4pm) which is unbelievably cheap! Plus the timing gives you better access to equipment anyway.

Community Club Gym

Apart from the ActiveSG gyms, you can also find small public gyms dotted all over the island. These are found in your friendly neighbourhood CC. Price is usually around the same or slightly more expensive than ActiveSG gyms.

Although CC gyms are usually tiny and super basic, they’re perfectly serviceable if all you want to do is run on a treadmill somewhere close to home. They might even be less crowded than ActiveSG gyms as well.

SAFRA EnergyOne Gym (for SAFRA members)

If you’re a SAFRA member, you might want to consider joining the SAFRA EnergyOne gyms as they are affordable but have better facilities (like sauna/steam room) and are less jam-packed than ActiveSG and CC gyms. It’s similarly basic though, and just as focused on cardio and resistance machines rather than weights.

Price-wise, it’s a little complicated. There’s an expensive up-front fee you have to pay, but the longer you are a member with the gym, the cheaper the rate is.

GymmBoxx

GymmBoxx is a heartlander gym rat’s dream. It has clean facilities, a great variety of premium workout equipment, and very helpful staff. In fact, this place offers what you’d expect from a big gym chain at a fraction of the price.

Another great thing about GymmBoxx is that you don’t even need to pay for a membership. You can get your two-hour workout done for about $5 or $7 per session.

Of course, if you plan on working out regularly, it’ll be much more cost effective just to pick up a membership. You can get a 7% discount on your membership if you have a DBS/POSB card or 5% discount if you have a Passion Card.

Prices vary depending on outlet location. The Standard outlet at Eunos is the cheapest, while the Premium outlet at Kent Ridge is more expensive than usual.

Dennis Gym

Created by former Singapore Bodybuilding Federation (SBF) coach Dennis Tew, Dennis Gym has been serving the heartlands for some 20 years.

The core strength of this gym centers on its personal training services. However, if you know how to work out smartly without breaking bones or tearing muscles, you’ll find that this place has a great variety of premium equipment to work out your problem areas.

Dennis Gym prices

Here are the membership fees found on the Dennis Gym website. They also have monthly fees and 6-month contracts but they are not published. Before you sign up, definitely call them at 8543 2903 to find out about any promotional and concession rates.

True Fitness (for AIA insurance policyholders)

If you happen to be an AIA insurance policyholder, you can sign up for their lifestyle membership programme AIA Vitality for $5/month to get a fantastic discount on True Fitness membership – WITHOUT any lock-in period! This is the cheapest rate you can get on a CBD gym. True is also the only gym on this list that offers a lot of workout classes, if you’re the type who needs peer pressure to get motivated.

(FYI, AIA Vitality members also get cheaper rates at True Yoga as well as other perks like discounted movie tickets at Golden Village, in case you’re interested.)

Anytime Fitness

Anytime Fitness is the 7-11 of gyms – ubiquitous and open 24/7. It’s a big franchise so the quality varies quite a bit from outlet to outlet. Most branches are pretty small and don’t have a lot of equipment, especially weight lifting equipment like plates and benches. It’s on the pricey side, especially compared to its direct competitor GymmBoxx, but that might be a tradeoff if you want total convenience.

24XFitness

24XFitness is a new competitor to Anytime Fitness offering pretty much the same deal – 24/7 gym facilities. However, it focuses a lot more on personal training, which may explain the heftier price and long lock-in periods. Still, given the premium locations and how new the equipment and facilities are, it might be worth the membership fees.
