Chart of the Day: Singapore’s home broadband business continues to face intensifying competition

Over 50% yet to convert to fibre.

The home broadband business will continue to see intense competition next year, according to CIMB Research.
CIMB says that with 54% of Singapore’s home fixed broadband customers yet to convert to fibre as at mid-2014, new players are expected, such as M1, MyRepublic, SuperInternet and Viewqwest, to remain aggressive on pricing to win over these subscribers.

This will put more pressure on StarHub (which traditionally has the largest share of high-speed cable broadband users) and, to lesser extent, SingTel. Thus far, both incumbents have done well to defend their subscriber market share, although this has occurred at the expense of ARPU. Fixed broadband ARPU for StarHub has fallen by a steep 22.2% from 2Q13 to 3Q14 while SingTel’s ARPU has fallen by 10.7%.
