The Chinese government is taking aim at European farmers instead of German automakers by launching an investigation into European Union pork imports, just days after the EU said it plans to impose provisional tariffs on China-made electric vehicles. The Commerce Ministry didn't mention the EV tariffs when it announced Monday that it is opening an anti-dumping investigation into pork from Europe, but the move is widely seen as a response to the EU move on electric cars.

Chinese automakers seek retaliatory tariffs on EU cars, state media reports
SHANGHAI/BEIJING/BERLIN (Reuters) -Chinese automakers have urged Beijing to hike tariffs on imported European gasoline-powered cars in retaliation for Brussels' curbs on exports of Chinese-made EVs, the state-backed Global Times newspaper said on Wednesday. In a closed-door meeting on Tuesday also attended by European car companies, China's auto industry "called on the government to adopt firm countermeasures (and) suggested that positive consideration be given to raising the provisional tariff on gasoline cars with large-displacement engines," according to the report. The meeting, organised by China's Ministry of Commerce, was held in Beijing and attended by SAIC, BYD , BMW, Volkswagen and its Porsche division, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

A flight engineer at the company said the public response has been “really positive”.“Our product can operate both autonomously and manually. It is very simple to operate. Even for a beginner, after about an hour of training, you should have a grasp of the basic controls aboard the aircraft. So our autopilot feature requires no manual operation, which eliminates the traditional learning curve associated with conventional aircraft, because a conventional aircraft typically require extensive hands-on training."The model is intended for short trips within a city area. And the company says it does not emit any carbon dioxide during flight.As for whether it’d be available to buy, AeroHT said the X2 is an “iterative product that is not intended for sale to the public.”

Electric vehicle maker Fisker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the second electric startup to do so in the last year as even industry leaders struggle to lure more buyers beyond the early adapters of the technology. Fisker Group Inc. said in a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware that its estimated assets are between $500 million and $1 billion. “Like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic headwinds that have impacted our ability to operate efficiently,” the company said in a prepared statement late Monday.

India to probe railway collision that killed nine, injured dozens
India will launch an investigation on Tuesday into a train collision that killed nine people in the state of West Bengal and injured more than 50, a day after a top railway official blamed the incident on driver error. The death toll was revised down to nine from 15 after Monday's accident, in which a freight train rammed into a passenger train heading for the state capital of Kolkata from the northeastern state of Tripura. The investigation by India's top railway safety official will start on Tuesday, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, general manager of the Northeast Frontier railway, where the accident happened, told Reuters.

GE Aerospace is developing a hybrid electric engine with the hopes it will power next-generation narrow-body jets by the middle of the next decade. While the technology is still being tested, should GE be successful, it could produce hybrid-engine jets - like a Toyota Prius of the skies - that would go a long way toward cutting the aviation industry's carbon emissions worldwide, half of which come from single-aisle jets. Hybrid cars are common on the roads, but decarbonizing the aerospace industry is considered much more difficult.
