Nvidia profits soar on demand for AI power
Nvidia said Wednesday its quarterly net profit rocketed by seven times year-on-year on demand for its chips to power artificial intelligence in data centers.The California-based company reported a net profit of $14.9 billion, while its revenue of $26 billion was almost four times what it took in during the same fiscal quarter last year.

Canada's Power Corp shuts down China unit, lays off staff, sources say
Power Corporation of Canada (Power Corp) has shut its China investment unit and dismissed all staff, said two people briefed on the matter, becoming the latest Western financial firm to pull back amid the country's economic challenges. Power Sustainable, which is the asset management arm of Power Corp and manages $4.5 billion of assets globally, started laying off all of its 17 local staff in recent weeks as it moved towards shutting down the Shanghai-based unit, said the people. Economic slowdown has seen many of the Western financial firms that scrambled to expand China operations a few years ago take a hit on their earnings and rein in their ambitions for what was a key piece of their global growth strategy.

Last week's sweeping measures to support the property sector, which authorities dubbed as historic, were the latest in a series of steps China has taken since February in a bid to boost consumption, funnel state money into priority sectors and underpin the stock market. "To some extent, I think what's been announced isn't yet of a scale that is going to start putting a meaningful kind of tens of percentage points onto GDP," said Sunil Krishnan, head of multi-asset funds at Aviva Investors in London.

Nvidia's strong forecast lifts shares of AI chipmakers
A stronger-than-expected revenue forecast from Nvidia after the bell on Wednesday lifted shares of the artificial-intelligence chipmaker and fueled gains in other chip and technology stocks. Shares of Nvidia were last up 3.5% while Advanced Micro Devices was up 1.2% and Broadcom was up 0.8% in after-hours trading. "I believe I heard a collective sigh of relief across Wall Street as many investors and analysts were nervous about Nvidia and the entire tech center ahead of this announcement," said Michael Schulman, chief investment officer at Running Point Capital.

Traders are pricing in a big move for Nvidia’s shares after the chipmaker reports earnings on Wednesday, though expectations for volatility are more muted than in the past, U.S. options markets show. Nvidia's options are primed for an 8.7% swing in either direction by Friday, according to data from options analytics firm Trade Alert. Brent crude futures settled down 83 cents, or 1%, to $82.88 a barrel. Ahead of this weekend's Memorial Day holiday, which kicks off the U.S. peak summer driving season, retail gasoline prices fell for the fourth consecutive week to $3.58 per gallon on Monday, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its gasoline and diesel fuel update.

XPeng stock rose Tuesday after the Chinese electric-vehicle maker reported better-than-expected first-quarter numbers. A year ago, XPeng reported a per-share loss of 38 cents on sales of $573 million. Quarterly gross profit margins were about 13%, up about 11 percentage points year over year and about two percentage points better than analysts’ forecasts.

Dollar firm as Fed officials urge patience on rate cuts
The U.S. dollar edged up against the euro on Tuesday, as Federal Reserve policymakers said it is prudent for the U.S. central bank to wait several more months to ensure that inflation really is back on a path to the 2% target before commencing interest rate cuts. Fed Governor Christopher Waller told the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, on Tuesday, he would need to see several more months of good inflation data before he would be comfortable supporting an easing in the stance of monetary policy. Waller, however, did put a pin in any speculation that interest rates may need to rise again for demand to soften enough to ease price pressures further, saying the latest inflation data is "reassuring" and the probability of a rate hike is "very low."
