Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock you can’t fail to have noticed that Barbie has had a long overdue ‘body positive’ makeover. Yep, earlier this week Mattel released a new range of ‘diverse’ Barbies, featuring curvy, tall and petite shapes plus various skin tones, eye colours and hair textures. So far so step in the right direction.

But though the ‘Fashionista’ range was met with the social media stamp of approval, many were somewhat perplexed as to why Barbie’s long-term lover hadn’t been treated to the same modern makeover.

Well anything Barbie can do Ken can do better, or at least in the imagined sense, because in the absence of a response from official makers Mattel, one fashion company has taken it upon itself to reimagine a new set of Kens for 2016. Introducing Ken 2.0.

Shopping website, Lyst and artist Jamie Phillips have joined creative forces to bring Ken bang up to date to reflect modern man’s true appearance. So its goodbye washboard abs, Hollywood smile and perfect parting and hello dad bod, beer belly and bald patch. And in a move echoing Barbie’s more realistic reinvention, the ‘fashionisto’ range will also feature black, Asian and petite figures. Designed to also reflect changing tastes in fashion there’s even a bearded hipster doll complete with thick-rimmed glasses and a checked flannel shirt.

Sadly the new Ken dolls will not be available to purchase, but all the clothes worn by the figures are shoppable on Lyst.com

And Mattel take note, body issues aren’t exclusive to women. Time to ditch Ken’s thigh gap too!
