MADRID (AP) _ Banco Santander SA (SAN) on Wednesday reported third-quarter profit of $2.31 billion.

The bank, based in Madrid, said it had earnings of 13 cents per share.

The financial holding company posted revenue of $13.63 billion in the period. Its revenue net of interest expense was $13.63 billion, which topped Street forecasts.

The company's shares closed at $4.79. A year ago, they were trading at $6.53.
