Alfa heads to US in June with sporty $54,000 4C

Alfa Romeo returns to the US in June with sporty 4C that will start around $54,000

NEW YORK (AP) -- After a nearly 20-year absence, Italian car maker Alfa Romeo is returning to the U.S. market.

Alfa CEO Harald Wester says the company plans to ship around 100 4C sports cars to the U.S. this June.

Alfa expects to ship around 800 cars to the U.S. for the full year. Shipments will grow to 1,200 in 2015.

Wester won't yet say which U.S. dealers will sell Alfas, or how customers can order them. Alfa's owners, Fiat and Chrysler, will release more details next month.

Wester calls the 4C an "affordable supercar." It's hand made in Italy and has a 1.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower.

The 4C will start around $54,000.

Wester made the comments Wednesday at the New York auto show, where Alfa is displaying the 4C.
