According to the BBC, Singapore is one of the costliest countries to live in. With the prices of food and daily necessities increasing faster than wages, it is no wonder that many of us are looking to make some extra cash on the side.

Here are five easy-to-implement ways to generate some additional income without quitting your day job.

1. Sell your unwanted Items
Selling stuff that you no longer use for is probably the most common way of making money. As they say: “One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure”. If you are looking for a place to sell your things, look no further than the famous online marketplace Carousell.com.

The website has streamlined the entire process such that you can create a profile, upload a photo and start selling within minutes.
It also stands out from other websites thanks to its social-friendly features where buyers can “like” the item (to be notified of any updates) or chat with the seller instantly and start negotiating about the price.

So don’t leave your old things collecting dust when you can turn them into extra cash so easily. Start combing your house for unwanted items today.

2. Rent something out
What if you have some items that you may need someday but have no use for now? Well, you can rent them out through a website named RentTycoons.

The first local portal to specialise in peer-to-peer rental, RentTycoons has a wide listing of products and services ranging from electronics to even wedding essentials. Want to rent a popcorn machine for your party? Check. Thinking of trying out the new PS3 for a week? Check.

Thanks to the Internet (and RentTycoons), you can now list your books, party supplies, game consoles, appliances, baby gear and just about anything else you can think of. People can simply rent them for an agreed period of time — and you get paid almost instantly. They will also need to pay a deposit beforehand to help ensure your items will be well taken care of.

3. Freelance (anytime, anywhere)
Are you able to write some blog article reviews or design a website in a relatively short time? You can turn to freelancing and offer your services, get clients and start making money quickly.

There are two popular online freelance marketplaces to choose from – Upwork.com and Freelancer.sg. People from all over the world are looking for services ranging from logo design, web development to bookkeeping services. Don’t be discouraged if you’re a complete beginner. Given the huge mixture of services, you may be able to find a project that you can contribute to.

To sum up, freelancing is a relatively good method to earn some consistent side income every month. The key thing is to obtain some great reviews at the start in order to secure more and more deals as people see that you are reliable.

4. Turn your car ‘liability’ into an ‘asset’
In the past, a car has always been considered a liability in Singapore due to the incredibly high costs of owning one. However, as the concept of ride-sharing becomes more common, you can start making money with your own car by using GrabHitch.

According to Grab Singapore, as a GrabHitch driver, you create routes at your own convenience and you decide which passengers to pick up. You can choose to do it twice a day, on a particular weekday every week, only on weekends – it’s entirely up to you. With that, you get to cover your fuel and car maintenance costs, meet new people from all walks of life and contribute to a car-lite Singapore!

What if you have no car and want to give it a shot as a part-time driver? No problem – in partnership with Uber, Smove lets you rent a car on a per-hour basis and there is no need to pay for any deposit, insurance or ACRA. As the vehicles can be found at multiple locations island-wide, you can pick up and return the car easily.

5. Become a tutor
If you’re proficient at playing an instrument, speaking a foreign language or teaching certain tough academic subjects (A-Maths, Physics), you are ready to impart some of your knowledge as a tutor.

And you don’t have to look wide and far for students. A simple online search on “tuition Singapore” will bring you many different tuition centres with lots of assignments for you to choose from. Working at an estimated hourly rate of $25, you can stand to earn $200 per month per student (based on two lessons per week). If you are able to juggle your free time well, you can literally make hundreds of dollars on a monthly basis.
