Las Vegas is packed with things to do in the summer. It better be — how else can you convince people to come to the desert during the hottest months of the year?

Even better, many of the most exciting events, attractions and activities are inexpensive or even free to enjoy. Whether you’re a lone traveler, part of a group, there with a significant other or looking for family fun, there’s plenty to do this summer in Vegas without denting your wallet.

Silverton Casino Hotel Aquarium

Consistently ranked as one of the top attractions in Vegas, the Silverton Casino Hotel Aquarium is home to thousands of tropical fish swimming in 117,000 gallons of water — but the real draw is the mermaids.

Yes, mermaids.

The aquarium puts on free, interactive mermaid swims every day of the week, where spectators can watch the mythical creatures gracefully explore the depths and interact with their fellow marine life. Bring the whole family. It won’t cost you a dime.

Downtown Las Vegas Arts District and First Friday

The New York Times called the Downtown Las Vegas Arts District “the least Vegas neighborhood in Vegas,” and you can peruse the culturally eclectic 18-square-block area for free. The artists, galleries, exhibits, displays, performances and showcases represent a diverse blend of art, media and imagery, both contemporary and traditional, for your enjoyment.

For 17 years, the community organization DTLVA has hosted the monthly First Friday event, one of the best attractions in Vegas. DTLVA writes, “Showcasing local artists, musicians, food trucks, makers and more, First Friday provides a platform for local culture and creativity to be celebrated in all its forms.”

It’s 100% free with no admission fee, which leaves you plenty of money to partake in the hidden gem district’s many shops, bars, restaurants, entertainment offerings and more.

Flamingo Wildlife Habitat

The center-Strip Flamingo Hotel and Casino is one of the most famous, busiest and most bustling spots in the city — but an on-theme oasis hides within.

The Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is set among four lush and idyllic outdoor acres of waterfalls, gardens and streams, which are home to exotic animals like turtles; tropical fish like sturgeon, koi and albino catfish; birds like brown pelicans and hummingbirds, and, of course, a flock of Chilean flamingos.

Not only is it completely free to enjoy, but you don’t need a reservation or ticket. Just show up between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. any day of the week and step off the Strip and into an oasis of nature and relaxation.

Lake of Dreams at Wynn Las Vegas

The Wynn Las Vegas puts on a free show every half hour, every night, starting at dusk — and if you’re in the area, it’s worth a visit.

The Lake of Dreams show is “a multimedia experience that blends colorful puppetry, an immersive soundtrack and state-of-the-art sound and lighting to create an unforgettable spectacle on Wynn’s signature water attraction,” according to the show’s website.

The three-acre Lake of Dreams comes to life with 5,500 sparkling LED lights and is framed by a 90-foot performance waterfall and 1,500 pine trees. That scenery provides the backdrop for stunning visual displays designed by “a world-class team that includes Emmy-winning director Kenny Ortega, production designer Michael Curry and lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe.”

Watch while having dinner on the patio at Lakeside or SW Steakhouse, or while sipping cocktails at Bar Parasol.

Bellagio Water Show

With the exception of the famously retro “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada” sign that has welcomed generations of visitors, the Fountains of Bellagio is probably the most instantly recognizable and best-known sight in Sin City.

Billed by the Bellagio as “the most ambitious, complex water feature ever conceived,” the Fountains are “absolutely free for any visitor to enjoy.”

The water comes to life Monday through Friday every 30 minutes from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., then every 15 minutes from 8 p.m. to midnight. The schedule is the same on the weekends, except the show starts at noon on Saturdays and Sundays.

The display, which spans more than 1,000 feet with water soaring as high as 460 feet toward the sky, is a must-see attraction for anyone who visits Vegas on any budget.
