4 Daily Habits You Ought To Kick If You Want To Save More Money

This article was originally on GET.com at: 4 Daily Habits You Ought To Kick If You Want To Save More Money

Everybody in Singapore knows that times aren't good at the moment and it sure doesn't help that Singapore is, once again, the most expensive city to live in for 2017. Some are rich, others are poor; our society, like many others, is pretty unequal. But for those of us who are blessed to have a roof over our head, food on the table, some savings in the bank, and our loved ones supporting us through thick and thin, what more can we ask for but be grateful?

While money may be considered a necessary evil, there could be things that you aren't doing to save more money smartly. Also, we at GET.com have gathered 4 tips for you to help you save more money. Below are some daily habits that we reckon everyone should get rid of if they're looking to shave their expenditure and tighten their purse strings.

4 Daily Habits To Kick If You Want To Save More Money

1. Buying Coffee Daily From Cafes And Coffee Shops

This doesn't apply to food bloggers and wealthy people, by the way. But, if all you need is a piping hot cuppa to start your day on a right note, make your own coffee (or tea) and save the money. Going to hipster cafes and hipster hideouts is certainly a pretty envy-inducing thing to do, but who honestly can keep up with that as a paying customer?

2. Getting An Alcoholic Beverage Fix At Bars After Work

Do you fancy hanging out at bars after work, chugging pints of ice-cold craft beers or sipping some of the quirkiest cocktails in Singapore? I know I sure do, but it isn't healthy for our bank balances (and liver) in the long run.

Those who drink would know how expensive alcoholic beverages are in Singapore, especially when you have them at fancy awesome bars, pubs or clubs. Unless you're earning tons of money, it isn't very sensible to just keep spending on drinks all the time and end up getting wasted.

Of course, it's okay to chill out and dance your heart out occasionally, but know when to draw the line. By the way, credit cards like Citibank Clear Card and UOB YOLO give you sweet discounts when you use your card to pay for drinks. Just to put things into perspective, for example, you get 1-for-1 drinks at Zouk's Wine Bar if you pay using a Citibank card - so instead of paying $33 for a Flaming Lamborghini, you get 2 for that price!

All in all, make sure you're using the best credit cards for partygoers if you're going to be hanging out with your homies so that you get to save every penny possible.

3. Mindlessly Browsing Online Stores On The Go

You may not be into Pokemon GO, Korean dramas or Candy Crush, but you aren't so keen on keeping up with current affairs either whilst commuting alone. So, what do you do to kill time? You go on a online shopping browsing rampage, of course. Before you realise it, the payment processing page is already almost fully loaded and your item(s) paid for by you.

Yes, online shopping is super convenient and rather shiok to be frank, but if you aren't careful, it's easy to get addicted while enlarging the hole in your pocket.

4. Lighting Up The Cigarettes

Are you a heavy smoker? If you do, it's high time you cut down on smoking gradually and completely if you have the grit to kick your habit, save your health and some money.

I don't know what brand of cigarettes smokers generally prefer because I don't smoke, but a pack of Marlboro cigarettes cost about $13 here in Singapore. Those who smoke a pack a day would have to set aside $390 a month just to light these little sticks and mar their lungs' health at the same time, although I'm pretty sure ruining their health on purpose isn't their priority.

In case you haven't noticed, the above-mentioned $390 is probably enough to pay for a budget getaway outside of Singapore.
