3 best places in Singapore to celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival

With the seventh month done and dusted, it is finally time to start heading out at night, eating mooncakes, lighting paper lanterns, and enjoying all the bells and whistles that make up the Mid Autumn Festival.

This year, Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Friday, September 13.

We enjoy celebrating Mid Autumn Festival with the family, having both traditional and unusually flavoured mooncakes, chasing it down with a smooth cup of Chinese tea, then letting the children have a lantern parade at the neighbourhood playground.

But, seeing as Mid Autumn Festival falls on a Friday, you just might want to pick a more lively and festive locale to usher in the weekend after work, and celebrate your Mid Autumn Festival.

We’ve found the 3 best and centrally located places to visit this year to celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival.

 

Gardens By The Bay

Gardens By The Bay will be presenting a series of lantern sets from now to Sept 15.

The lantern sets include the Giant Revolving Lantern, Colonnade of Lights, Lattice of Lights, Illuminations of Joy, and Chinese Porcelain.

At the Supertree Grove, there will be cultural performances at the Supertree Grove daily from 8pm to 8.45pm, lantern riddles to solve, and Asian delights sold at the Food Street from 6pm to 10pm (Mon to Thu) and from 6pm to 11pm (Fri to Sun).

The mass lantern walk will be held on Sept 14 starting at 7.30pm at the SG Lattice. Free LED fabric lanterns will be provided from 7.15pm while stocks last.

Esplanade Theatres on The Bay

Looking for something more unique? Then head down to Moonfest at the Esplanade.

Moonfest is the annual traditional Chinese arts festival that is held to celebrate Mid Autumn Festival. This year, Moonfest is in its 15th edition and offers free programmes and ticketed workshops for everyone from young to old.

 

Some of the free programmes include the Chinese opera performance by the young winners of the Little Plum Blossom Award—the highest theatrical accolade in China, Taishan Shadow Puppetry performances, street opera performances by Sin Yong Hua Heng Teochew Opera Troupe, the Chinese Crosstalk x A Cappella performance by Soo Wee Seng, Ho Jia Wen, The Apex Project (Singapore), and a music performance by Yu Jian Huang Chong.

There will also be Chinese ethnic dances, performances of Hakka songs, Guqin performances and Teochew drum music performances. Visitors could solve Chinese riddles, learn Weiqi and the children could try out the bunny craft activities.

The Lantern Walkabout will be held on 14 Sep at 7.30pm at the Esplanade Forecourt Garden, where limited free lanterns will be given out.

Chinatown

A list like this would never be complete if it did not include Chinatown.

This year, Chinatown celebrates the Bicentennial Mid-Autumn Festival Celebrations from Aug 31 to Sep 28.

The street light up along New Bridge Road this year tells the story of Singapore over the past 200 years, while Eu Tong Sen Street, South Bridge Road and the inner streets of Chinatown features a display of traditional lanterns.

The festival programme includes nightly stage shows held at Kreta Ayer Stage, a festive bazaar from Aug 30 to Sep 13 located at Pagoda Street, Trengganu Street, Sago Street and Smith Street, and a trade fair at People’s Park Open Space from Aug 24 to Sep 22.

The Mass Lantern Walk will be held on Sep 8 at 7pm. The walk starts from Kreta Ayer Square and ends along New Bridge Road, at the Main Stage in front of Lucky Chinatown.
