2 Slovaks arrested in counterfeit money case

2 Slovaks arrested for allegedly producing forged Czech, Swiss banknotes of high quality

PRAGUE (AP) -- Slovak police have arrested two men after they allegedly produced counterfeit Czech and Swiss banknotes of "exceptionally" high quality and spent at least 1.2 million koruna ($60,000) of the fake cash in shopping malls over the past three years.

Police said Wednesday the suspects, aged 34 and 32, produced the bills in the central Slovak city of Zvolen.

Authorities say the bills included security features not known to the general public whose quality surprised investigators and Central Bank experts. Since 2011, the two allegedly made 24 percent of all counterfeit 500-koruna ($25) bills discovered in the Czech Republic and 17 percent of all 1,000-koruna bills. Police also seized an unspecified number of Swiss 100-franc ($114) bills.

The two face up to 10 years in prison.
